The Canadian Bianca Andreescu has caused a big surprise on Thursday by eliminating the third player in the world, Caroline Wozniacki, in a match of the eighth finals of the tournament of the tennis ASB Auckland, New Zealand.
The Ontario girl who occupies 152nd rank in the world rankings of the WTA tour, has disposed of his rival of Denmark in two innings, 6-4, 6-4. It has dominated the player 10 years his senior in the points earned in the first and second serve, while winning four balls from breakage.
Caroline Wozniacki had been ranked the favorite of the tournament.
Bianca Andreescu, who is younger than 18 years of age, will play Friday in the quarter-finals of the legendary American Venus Williams, who will be 39 years old next June. Ms. Williams, who is 39th player in the world and has won 49 singles tournaments in his career, was defeated on Thursday, with her compatriot Lauren Davis in two rounds, 6-4, 6-3.
As for the other Canadian in the running, la Québécoise Eugenie Bouchard, she will play later on Thursday, a quarter-final match to germany’s Julia Georges, 14th racket of the world.
